KFMB TV NEWS part 1

Mystery of Rods
It's the story we brought you a few months ago, the mystery
of rods. You can't see them with the naked eye, but they show up
when you slow down videotape. Now we've taken it even further, journeying
deep into Mexico to a mysterious cave. A cave that some call a habitat
or maybe even the birthplace of rods.
It's a place a television crew had accidently discovered while doing
a special on skydivers. Jose Escamilla, the man who is searching
for the answer to the rods mystery, has always wanted to go there.
So we packed up all our cameras and Jose and headed south.
From Mexico City to San Luis Potosi, then a six hour drive to the
cave. The cave is called Sotano de Las Golondrinas, Cave of the
Sparrows. It's a pit more than 1200 feet deep. The locals say they've
seen and heard strange things at the cave, but have never seen a
creature that looks like a rod.
Rods Everywhere
No question about it, whatever they are, rods aren't
camera shy! They were seen making a guest appearance in a music
video from Mexico. And again, they are seen in the jungle accidently
caught on tape by the Discovery Channel. The Learning Channel caught
one and the rods seems to be fleeing from a New Jersey fire caught
by a news crew.
After setting out to catch rods in our first Rod Investigation NEWS
8 photographer, John Steinbaugh, found himself accidently catching
another rod while shooting a story. But he's not the only photographer
who thinks they've seen rods.
The History Channel has seen them. A rod is seen flying through
one of their interviews.
The idea of rods is nothing new. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator
of Sherlock Holmes wrote about rod like creatures in a short story
called horror of heights.
Could flying serpents really be ancient rods that had been spotted
on a documentary footage of lion cubs. They seem to be everywhere!
And not just in tv shows either.
While Mel Gibson was, in Scotland, filming Braveheart there's a
shot actually taken from the making of Braveheart. Slow down one
of the scenes and look very close. There's a rod, passing by Mel's
head.
So, are these images appearing on television and in movies actual
rods or just something blurred by a camera? No one knows for sure.
So keep your eyes open, and your videotapes rolling.
